Finding Legitimate Producers
The #1 concern for all those who are looking to get involved in amateur video is "How do I choose the right company"?
Being involved in this business since 1999 I have heard every horror story you can thing of. Most have occurred because people do not check do their homework before getting involved with a company. This business can be very shady, but it also has many honest, reputable people as well.
Rule #1:
No phone #.. No Involvement.. If you can't speak to a live person, then don't get involved. No legitimate company will consider doing a shoot without speaking to the person to who is interested. My #1 priority is that I must speak to you before any arrangements can be discussed. If a company wants to arrange things via email or send contracts or paperwork via email, don't even waste your time. Your gonna get burned.
Now don't get me wrong, things of this nature can be done through email, but only after you have discussed things via phone or in person.
Rule #2:
The company must have some type of web presence. A producer who can't direct you to a web page, blog or other form of representation of their company, can't be too trustworthy. A good company will always provide photos, clips or other means of showing you their past work. If its an upstart company, they might not have a lot of material to provide, but they should have something set-up to provide you with an understanding of their business.
Rule #3:
Don't let money be the main factor. Many companies can throw big #'s your way, but find out what's going to be involved in obtaining this type of money. Making big money and having to be on a set for 8 hours and doing stuff your not comfortable with is not all that much fun. Many times smaller companies who will require less of your time and tailor things toward what you enjoy are a better route, especially for 1st timers... Which brings me to my next rule.
Rule #4:
Enjoy yourself! Lets face it, most people are not going to be the next big porn star. Make sure that what you get involved with is going to be enjoyable for you. Also, make sure that the company has the same intentions. Good producers will want you to enjoy the shoot... this is what makes a good amateur video. If they don't ask you what you enjoy, then don't bother get involved with them. Sex should be fun for all involved.
