I'll leave out cultural, religious or general health reasons for avoiding pork. This is another sign of how we have fucked the world up... when food starts killing you... you've done something wrong... especially when it can kill you before you even eat it.

Hormones... growth formulas...cross breeding...pesticides... creating cannibalistic animals... all of these things have contributed to recent food related issues... mad cow... foot and mouth... avian flu.

hopefully no one we know will get it.... but just a quick FYI on search found this ;-}
=============================================
Fact file: Swine flu and safety measures

Staff Report
Published: April 25, 2009, 09:31

What is it? It is a virus that mutated from pigs and transmitted to some humans

Which places have been affected? Mexico City, California and Texas, so far

How many have been killed? 81 people in Mexico City

How many have been infected? 18 confirmed cases in Mexico and eight in the United States. Authorities are investigating 1,300 more suspected cases.

Is there a cure? The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website states that there is no vaccine to specifically protect humans from swine flu, only to protect pigs. Although GlaxoSmithKline Plc's flu treatment Relenza and Roche Holding AG's Tamiflu appear effective against the strains of the virus the CDC has tested.

What are authorities doing to contain the virus? The World Health Organization went on high alert, dispatching top experts to the United States and Mexico. The CDC has also set up emergency operation centres.

Easy ways to protect against infection

Little can be done to prevent an outbreak of flu from spreading, health experts caution, but they say common sense measures can help individuals protect themselves. Practice the following:

- Wash your hands frequently

- Cover your cough or your sneeze

- Use alcohol-based gel or foam hand sanitizers

- If you have flu-like symptoms, stay away from work or public transportation

- Social distancing. Stay away from people who might be infected

its spread person to person or animal to person... so if your not petting a sick pig or getting sneezed on by a sick person - you most likely wont get it....

And i'm sure when you eat pork you cook it over 160 F to protect yourself from the list of things you can get from pork... but hey more bacon for me even cheaper if you all don't buy it ;-}}}

It's only an issue because we are close genetically to pigs, most animals have a form of flu they suffer from at some time or another , Horses, cows even snakes.

As has been said you are only at risk if you've travelled to the infected areas or have contact with someone who has....

While so far this virus does not have a high mortality rate, atleast when compared to any influenza strain, there is one frightening fact.

Normally the flu attacks the weakest among us... Those already ill or the very young or elderly. This strain seems to be wreaking havoc among typically healthy people... teens and young adults making up a large portion of those infected.

Very true Dymond, the age range hit hardest seems to be between 25 and 45 , they are saying that this is possibly because the immune system is so strong and goes into overdrive to combat it , so making the symptoms worse...... I have to stress I'm no expert , I've just heard a lot about it today on the TV and Radio.

I was wondering Clit... is it because the immune systems of those people are so strong or it because...we have systematically weaked our immune systems by our lifestyles and all the chemicals we ingest?

I took it as a sign that we have perhaps weakened our overall base. Given sanitation methods and medical advances we are still seeing a rise in epidemics and pandemics. I think that speaks to the constituion of humans in general.

I think CL stated it right from what I heard... it is that they go into overdrive and drowns the lungs ect... as the body fights it off trying to find the right solution to this invader... Tamiflu will fight it off but we have like 12 million dozes in a 300 million population... and Dr's, Firemen, police etc....getting it first.... Lets hope it passes soon... ummmm lets hope it is not so bad and ends soon i mean ;-}
