I use WinSCP for uploading editing sites etc and when I try to connect it tells me this:

"Cannot initialize SFTP protocol. Is the host running a SFTP server?
Connection has been unexpectedly closed. Server sent command exit status 1. "

WinSCP requires several things to use on a server.
I would suggest using an FTP client like CoreFTP Lite.

They block Shell access to a degree for many reasons. The SFTP is a shell ftp and not needed for most types of sites to put it as easy as I can. Core is real easy to use and the one I use most of the time because of the easy learning curve.
