PROSTITUTION - INPUT APPRECIATED BELOW
SEE QUESTION 1 TO 5 FOR STARTERS
Thanks very much Levity
Wikipedia definition: Prostitution is the act or practice of providing sexual services with another person in return for payment. Persons who execute such activity are called prostitutes. Prostitution is one of the branches of the sex industry. Estimates place the annual revenue generated from the global prostitution industry to be over $100 billion.
TYPES:
STREET: Solicits customers while waiting at street corners or "walking the street". BROTHEL: Establishment/house specifically dedicated to prostitution. MASSAGE PARLOURS: Where sexual services may be offered as a secondary function of the premises. ESCORTS: The act takes place at the customer's place of residence or more commonly at his or her hotel room. SEX TOURISM: Trips organized from within the tourism or outside the tourism sector using its structures and networks, with the primary purpose of arranging commercial sexual relationships by tourists with residents at the destination. INTERNET: Many prostitutes use the Internet to find customers either through forums or their own site.
LEGAILITY The legal status of prostitution varies from country to country, from being legal and considered a profession, to being punishable by death: A) Some jurisdictions outlaw the act of prostitution (the exchange of sexual services for money); B) Some countries do not prohibit prostitution itself, but ban the activities typically associated with it (soliciting in a public place, operating a brothel, pimping etc.) making it difficult to engage in prostitution without breaking any law; thus many prostitutes do end up being convicted of related misdemeanours. C) In a few countries prostitution is legal and regulated.
B above applies to the UK. Prostitution itself is legal but related activities, including soliciting in a public place, kerb crawling, keeping a brothel, pimping and pandering, are outlawed. Also having sex with a trafficked prostitute is a convictable offense.
QUESTIONS FOR YOU My questions for you, if you don't mind answering, are the following (please be candid if you can) answer any question you want, no probs if you don't want to answer all:
1) Is prostitution a justified occupation, as in is it a necessity for it to exist in some form?
2) If you had a good friend, then found out they had been or are a prostitute, what's the things that would run through your mind, would that person remain your friend the same as before you found out? If not, why not?
3) Selling sex online is apparently fine with most here, cool, but what if someone here went a step further and sold actual contact sex (this happens at other websites), what would be your opinion of persons who took this extra step into the sex industry? Would you pull back from them, be concerned, be horrified? Or see no issue, maybe see it as business decision, or... dare I say it, make your booking??
4) Hypothetically if you were given the one time opportunity to be half owner of a legal well run extremely successful and well frequented brothel for no capital outlay on your part, would you accept the offer (note this is a 100% legal establishment hypothetically) or would your moral outlook prevent you touching it with a tend foot pole? How easy a decision would it be for you to make?
5) Do you think prostitution or the sex industry in general can ever genuinely be a way of getting oneself out of the poverty trap? Or is that just a pipe dream for 99.9%?
These are my first questions, I may add more, but your input will be very interesting to me and probably others too, and I'll of course give more views myself too once I get some feedback. Be serious or light hearted I don't mind.
Thanks
Levity

I lived a time in an area theat was economically depressed. There were a lot of crack houses, and prostitution was very prevelant. I lived very close to downtown, so I walked to work. I could not got to work, or go home at night without running the guantlet of pros, they even sold it in the alley and to the side of where I worked. When I got bored at work, or was on break, I would watch them. I got to know some of them quite well. They were not only poor, they had no education most were junior high or high school dropouts. Many were not on drugs, but some were. I had two good friends who were pros. One I dated, and I was engaged to another. She was very good about hiding her addiction, the eason I called it off. The area where I lived was safe, but across the river it was not. I believe it should be legalized and regulated. It will exist, because it is wanted and needed by people. I knew no one in this area, so it was an easy decision. I knew people who were widowed, who frequented pros, they same with people with certain disabilities. My best friend in town was a pro, and I didn't care, I got to know her very well, and I knew why she did what she did. Most were divorced with several kids. She was a woman and she was human and had her needs. I didn't care what she did for a living, strictly her business.. Sex online, I think a lot of dating sights involve sex for money, while others do not. I would say most are looking for some sort of sex anyway. Hopefully most online sites are better than that. I would not be horrified, maybe not even surprised. Sure I would accept part or whole ownership, it's a business like any other. Money and morals don't usually travel in the same boat, but I knew pros that were highly moral. I see no problem, because it would be legal and people obviously pay to have one way or another. I would say many of the people are already in the poverty rap and really in survival mode. Some pros marry and get out, others continue it after a marrying. I think some women or men could get out of it, if they have that goal, but many i think see no way out, and keep doing what they have to to survive, I think they all have the dream to leave prostitution, but not the means or the mental set it takes to rise above they're circumstances. I the town where I lived I never met a pro who had a pimp. These women, and i never saw a younger women, went down town in the clothes they wore everyday no makeup or fancy clothes and offered themselves for whatever they could get. I only knew one woman who dressed like pros on TV. No men either, they were for sale across the river where you could buy whatever you wanted from drugs to pros. I have no idea how that town is now. All this is based upon my experiences. Legal or not it is a problem that will never go away, and will always confront us, the only problem is whether or not we turn away or look it in the eye. |

Thankz 4 replying Levity... The concept of institutionalized prostitution is not my own, but can be found in some of the earliest origins of the "profession". The Taj Mahal is dedicated to the Queen who was also a "dancer". The outer part of the building is decorated with nudity, dance moves, and sexual practices that would be considered pornographic by contemporary western standards. There is a reason why you mostly see pictures of it at a distance. LOL One person mentioned keeping it away from children's schools and places of worship. Prostitution is rooted in both places. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and even Jews and the early Christian church all had religious prostitutes. The term "nunnery" means both convent and brothel. I'm in agreement with the other respondants who believe that prostitution needs regulation not prohibition... Butt hey, datz juz' me. :) |

Prostitution should be legalized universally for similar reasons as marijuana and other recreational drugs: regulation. When alcohol was banned in the U.S during the early 20th century it led to one of the bloodiest and most corrupt periods in the country's history. However once lifted and regulated the violence and madness associated with liquor at that time was quickly forgotten as moderation was implemented.Prostitution is the same way, humans have wants, desires, basic comforts and sex is among one of them for most people.Just as one may want to down a few shots and go out for an evening, another may want to stay in and have consensual sex even being willing to pay for it as is his or her right.Sex is very lucrative, much like alcohol and marijuana revenue would be constant and actually increase in hard times when other luxuries cannot be attained (travel perhaps) so the government would have incentive. Not only would the patrons be happy and the government satisfied, but the regulations and standards that would be enforced would protect the prostitutes/courtesans from unruly clients and eliminate the need for pimps.S.T.D's and drug addiction would be rare and the workers would have rights in court as opposed to being criminals. This is the way the would should be operated, rather or not we will live to see it is contingent on how much the powers that be and the laymen want to change the antiquated status quo on prostitution.
Sex is both a pleasure and a potential business for some people so I see no need for judging someone who is selling sex in any manner, and actually would champion them for utilizing what they have and what they like to do for profit (I almost made a pornographic film myself).I would gladly own a brothel if indeed it allotted full right to my courtesans. As far as can prostitution elevate one above the poverty line I believe as of now to many variables inhibit such social capital and ascension be it age, perceived beauty, how much one could charge for service ect. However I think in the short term it could supplement one in such a way they could save up and combined with other jobs perhaps allow them opportunity to raise above.I still stand by the need for regulation to truly allow a positive gain close to a 0 sum beneficial gain in prostitution. |

SweetInnocence thanks for being really frank and upfront, I like that! I agree totally that we are in no position to look down our noses at in-the-flesh sex workers. Im absolutely with you on that. I do though, veer off somewhat from what you think in that I now feel that prostitution is an extremely different game from the online sex world. Actually having sex with random people, people you might not even like or positively dislike, solely for money. That is the only deal breaker for me and probably why I'd make a v bad prostitute in the round. I dont want that to sound snooty, I simply see it that I don't have the gumption for doing people in the flesh I don't find attractive in at least personality if not looks. Who know what different circumstances or a different mind set would mean, so I dont judge, absolutely not. The completely once-removed nature of online XXX makes that whole sexual interaction thing not to be an issue whoever its with. So for that reason I see the two scenarios as quite far apart. Not better or worse, but very different, though undeniably closely linked at the centre. |

dometrias, thanks hun for the input. You make a valid point about loosing oneself in the business. A good point you make. When pursuit of that dollar becomes all consuming (with online sex work too) there can for some be no off switch, its so easy to end up feeling like you're always at work, a treadmill that you cant get off of. There needs to be some self imposed boundaries I think in whatever you choose to do for a living so that your ambition to make money doesn't take over your life, especially as with this industry particularly your means of making money is constantly with you 24/7, unlike with your average 9 to 5 where at the end of a hard day you leave it behind and go home for some relaxation time. I totally get though; its often not as black and white as that. Im glad Jody that you see, as everyone probably should I think, that selling sex for a living shouldnt in and of itself, be any obstacle to friendship. |

Hi Tweety love, thanks for adding your thoughts. I certainly do agree that yes prostitution can go hand in hand with unsavoury self harming stuff like feeding drug addiction, no point being naive about that or denying it, it's a big problem and sad.. I see on certain forums too that girls advertise bareback for the right price too, it is not uncommon. Safety is an issue for that and obvious other reasons. And your other point is interesting, yeah these things aren't always cut and dried, it mighty be a matter of marrying someone you dont like strictly for money, sleeping one's way to the top etc etc. Not sure if those can be lumped in with this, but they sure arent a million miles away.

BushTuckerMan hi hun, thanks for your input. Yes I agree re supply and demand, A world where selling sex didn't exist? Hmmm, I'm not sure what that would mean, but I don't know that it would be a better world. The important thing like you say is that no one is being forced, coerced or hurt. Take those things away, and who is anyone to tell anyone what they can and cannot do with their own body. Puritanical people want to teach us that too much fun and too much free will sends us straight to hell. Personally I vehemently disagree with that ethos. Re getting in on a brothel, it's interesting you as well as most in this discussion so far dont appear to have a problem with it. Me too on moral stand point if (and thats a big if) it was run in a NON exploitative fashion! Sign me up =) Going by what I see online though, the one hesitation might be that itd be sure fire dramaville :) Perhaps someone who has direct experience might say if this perception is correct? |

Hi QueenDeleona Thanks v much for responding, always so interesting to hear your take on things. Your point about many people who are outside the adult entertainment business holding harsh views and lumping everything together, struck a sad cord. Yes it's easy to sometimes forget that lots of perfectly decent people (in all other ways) when it comes to the adult genre they will uncharacteristically in many cases actually be unforgivably and brutally hostile to the entire sex industry concept whatever form it takes. You see those views expressed daily in every day life and in the media, whether subtly putting porn down or blatant hatred towards sex workers etc. Its disturbing and unjustified. Let us in the industry not make matters even worse by holding double standards ourselves. To me personally that just isn't fair. Re your point Quote: "I think that it should be not only legalized, but even institutionalized, in the form of proper education, training, and certification." I find that an utterly ingenious concept Ive never heard anyone else say before. That really is thinking outside the box, way to go Queen. |

I understand the industry and I applaud it. I have invested in it before and probably will again. I have dated girls , who had a price tag on that pussy and understood the consequences. I had to be there when problems aroused. A woman's body is her investment piece whether she chooses to use it or nit is her decision. I do not hold it against them and salute them. Its hard out here for all , but it's goes double for a prostitute. She has a lot going against her plus she has time ticking away. I say make your money and if you need a man to back you. You got a real one in Memphis. |

I think that prostitution is a valuable and justified if done correctly. I.e, if it was legalized and prostitutes are required to get checked out regulary and carry cards that denote they are clean.
A...good...nut on a regulary basis is essential for good health. Although many of us here on rude get good and frequent sex, many people are not so fortunate.
If they want to engage in a business transaction and buy sex then they should be able to do it.
There are some "professional hos" here on rude. I'm curious If they will come out and share thier views. |

I find that many cultures out law prostitution simply over some moral bullshit. Like many prohibited act the danger to human life is usually due more to the fact that it is illegal than anything else. There for prostitutes aren't protected by any laws because prostitution itself is illegal.
answers:
1) Yes, prostitution a justified occupation. IT is a simple case of supply and demand. Sex itself isn't a harmful activity.
2) Me being a Mr. Nice Guy...basically the who supports her...so she will be happy for another man who don't care about her....Nope, defiantly won't change the nature of our relationship.
3) No.
4) No, there for I don't see anything morally wrong with a brothel.
5.) Actually yes. Eventough main streem porn industry is suffering. Yet, things such as 'escorting', strippers, even thirsty ass dude harassing females is on a rise. Then again I have a theory about that poverty trap. I think the only reason why prostitution is illegal in most countries because it is a service that is hard to tax. With out a cop catching soliciting a john. All you know she could be fucking her boyfriend and he decided to give her "love money" as a gift. Only in parts of Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia is where a woman can't pull this off because it is illegal for a woman to be alone with a man who isn't related to her or her husband.

Provided all "encounters" are done with consent then for me anyways...
I feel that prostitution is in fact a justified occupation. Is it a necessity, perhaps for some. I do not know that anyone needs to be a prostitute any more then they need ot be a taxi cab driver or convience store clerk. I think that there certainly is a good amount of money which can be made and that it is an alluring and convient profession for some.
If I were to find out one of my friends was a prostitute I am sure I would certainly have a lot of questions for them. Mostly dealing with what was their most interesting request, how they got into that particualr field and such. Would my opinion of them change...probably not. How a person chooses to make a living is up to them. Just because I cannot find it in myself to do something in particular doesn't mean that someone who chooses to is morally wrong or corrupt. Who am I to judge their choice... it is no different to me for someone to make the choice to go to war or to be in law enforcement or to teach.
I do not know if I would make my own booking... but I would not blame them for choosing to do so. It is their body to do with as they see fit. It is a personal choice, for me no different then getting a tattoo or piercing or coloring ones hair.
Personally I would have no issue with being a part owner in a brothel... provided it made fiscal sence and the prostitutes therin (either male or famale) were clean, content with their cut of monies earned and there of their own free will.
I think any business venture has it's risks and gains moth monetairly as well as personally. The sex industry is no different. Some are going to make a lot of money. Some are going to make a respectable living, but never become "wealthy" at it. Some will use it as an alternate means of "pin money". And some will loose money in the venture. I think it has more to do with just how capable of finding their own niche and using good business sense to promore themselves within that niche, just as with any other type of business. Some people are able to make a very good living off of selling makeup, some not so much so...but most would not consider that business venture a "pipe dream fr success."
But then again... that is just my 21 chips worth. :)

To me there isn't much difference between what we do and what they do on the street. The main difference being the issue of safety for all involved. A second being that places like our humble abode require everyone to be 18+ and provide proof, where on the streets that doesn't necessarily occur. Furthermore, anyone who works in this industry as a whole chooses to do so for whatever reason, albeit there are exceptions to this (exp. kidnapped women/men/children forced into it by their kidnapper). For any of us to look down on a "street prostitute" would be an example of the pot calling the kettle black.
Look at it this way. Everyday we login and post pics, vids, etc of ourselves committing sexual acts. Some of us with multiple partners. How is that any different from finding some random man/woman on the street? They make money for every act and for the most part we all make money for every post we make.
I've known people from many walks of life and as long as they are trying to better themselves, provide for their families or whatever I have no business sitting in judgment of them. My only concern would be their safety and personally that should be the only concern any of us have. |

don't think i answered your question, i just rattled on...oops!
I have no problem with prostitution and i think it should be regulated and zoned from schools and places of worship.
If i had a friend who was a prostitute i would accept that person as they are, i would try to be an example of life outside that world and i would hope they would see the benefit of that. I don't like preaching to people.
I would hope they are doing it in the right way and handling it as a business first.
If it's a female i would think twice about getting physical with her because i wouldn't want to be just another "john" and she's just punching the time clock.
I'd be her friend and i have known women like this, treat them with the same respect as any other woman. |

I don't have a problem with most prostitution practices of business, i feel that what happens between consenting adults in the privacy of their surroundings is their business. I know in my area there are certain zoning rules for bars and clubs they have to abide by which is fine.
The thing i notice about bar strippers or anyone in the sex trade is some lose themselve and get caught up in the fast money and lose themselves, this is truely sad. I call it letting the money make them rather making the money. |

Do we all not prostitute ourselves in some way or some manner? Is prostitution limited to sexual favors? Having been or still being in the profession is dependent on access to your private side...if someone should know then someone should tell situation. Is it the out every lady thinks it is financially? Perhaps but noit being put out by someone or being in someones stable as this always seems to be the outcropping of drug problems or a criminal way of life. I think as others...administered and regulated yes it may make the world a tad safer for women and men looking for some contact of some kind. xoxoxo |

Lets take your questions 1 by 1... 1] is it a justifiable occupation, yes its a service, there is a demand and there will always be people willing to supply it.
2] If a friend was a prostitute, then Id probably be worried for her - or his - safety. In a properly regulated (and taxed) scenario, then I wouldnt be so concerned.
3] If people wanted to offer personal contact here, I wouldnt be worried, as long as they were not being coerced into it, it has to be freely (in terms of motivation) offered.
4] If I was offered an in to a brothel, then Id probably go for it, I know that I am probably more decent than many of the scumbags running such operations; I suspect that profits would go up
5] Im not sure, for some yes, but if its being used to feed a habit, then I suspect that the habit would get bigger, eating into any possible way out (depressing or what) |

1) Is prostitution a justified occupation, as in is it a necessity for it to exist in some form?: It's a profession, if they handle it as such. For many, it's a means to an ends. For some, it's a stepping stone. For others, it is merely a means of survival. Some are volunteers. Others have been forced. In antiquity, it was considered a religious/spiritual calling. Temple prostitutes were once honored for both physical and spiritual reasons and purposes...
2) If you had a good friend, then found out they had been or are a prostitute, what's the things that would run through your mind, would that person remain your friend the same as before you found out? If not, why not?: I would still be kool with them. I'm not in a position to look downward on them for that reason. It's not the occupation, but the person that I look at. Some of the biggest "hoez" out there, aren't 'prostitutes"... Or so they say!?!
3) Selling sex online is apparently fine with most here, cool, but what if someone here went a step further and sold actual contact sex (this happens at other websites), what would be your opinion of persons who took this extra step into the sex industry? Would you pull back from them, be concerned, be horrified? Or see no issue, maybe see it as business decision, or... dare I say it, make your booking??: To each their own... You have to live with you and your choices, not I. To ppl not into any aspect of adult entertainment or sex industry, when it comes to online, offline, in a club, on a street corner, etc. are looked at as being pretty much the same thing. If you are not into adult entertainment or the sex industry, it's hard to understand the ppl in it, whether they be producer, product, or consumer. I've come across this issue many times in discussions with other entertainers and waitresses, that work in gentlemen clubs. Many have been shunned, ridiculed, or even cast out by long time friends and their relatives for their choice of workplace and occupation.
4) Hypothetically if you were given the one time opportunity to be half owner of a legal well run extremely successful and well frequented brothel for no capital outlay on your part, would you accept the offer (note this is a 100% legal establishment hypothetically) or would your moral outlook prevent you touching it with a ten foot pole? How easy a decision would it be for you to make?: Where can I sign up?!? LOL ;)
5) Do you think prostitution or the sex industry in general can ever genuinely be a way of getting oneself out of the poverty trap? Or is that just a pipe dream for 99.9%?: It's a pipe dream for some and a reality for others. "Success" isn't what you do, but how you go about doing what you do, regardless of occupation. Drugs, the sex slave trade, and other negative aspects to prostitution show that many will not make it, in the day-to-day struggle. At the same token, it has been my experience that ppl will also hold back a person who tries to leave or change from these occupations. They make it a stigma and feel justified in not giving the person the opportunity to move beyond. The fact is nothing has ever stopped some form of prostitution from co-existing with "moral" society. I think that it should be not only legalized, but even institutionalized, in the form of proper education, training, and certification. Personally, I'm getting tired of any woman with a thong, heels, and stage time thinking that they are a "dancer"... And can't dance, let alone entertain!?! :/ LOL ...Butt hey, datz juz' me. ;D |

Season hey darlin. Well I gotta disagree on there being no difference between caming etc and street prostitution, and i speak as someone who used to view this along the same lines as you, but when I thought it through further, I now strongly think there is a massive difference between selling your body in the flesh, and selling it online. I don't say this in a holier than thou way, I hold no hoity judgement on the subject whatsoever, but I do think for many (most) it would be a monumental leap from one to the other. Anyone who disagrees on that though, please do say. HarlemVIP, interesting what you say about tons of chicks already doing that here. Hmmm, well I don't personally know of it, I'm probably naive, but what I do know is I have been offered money for sex now and then here - frequently elsewhere, so the law of averages would sugest that not everyone is gonna decline the offers (some other sites meetings are part of the package of offers too, so it's far from un-common) . And really, if I'm being brutally honest, does it really matter..... Re porno LOL you say u not packing a midget down there, ha!, a likely story!, don't forget we seen you performing your magic big man! ...re pie in the sky, you actually do hear of call girls clearing thousands $$$ per week, makes you think. I was going to agree with your final point too, then HarlemVIP made me think. Once it gets legalized, they can put taxes on it, which means prices are gonna freaking SKYROCKET....THAT means, that even CRACKHEADS who normally charge about $20 for a blowjob will end up talking 4-digits just for a handjob so they can "stay in the black"...lol....it sounds stupid, but trust me, once that door is open, the game is gonna get really bad... |
